The definition of physical fitness will determine your success

sheemobaxter Saturday, October 23, 2010

Always amazes me that life is a multi-billion dollar industry ... Still a solid, concise definition and universal fitness is difficult to nail.

Just ask someone participating in a physical fitness program, or even someone in the fitness industry for that matter, to give you a clear definition of fitness.

Probably will be satisfied with the look "deer caught in headlights" accompanied by stammering absurd.

If you receive a reply, you will probably be inclined towards the specific skills of the person who asked.

For example ...

A marathon runner will define fitness in terms of muscle strength and cardiorespiratory endurance ...A power-lifter will define fitness in terms of absolute force ...A bodybuilder will define fitness in terms of size and muscle definition ... etc.

But the vast majority of people participating in a physical fitness program isn't professional athletes concerned with improving the physical capacity of just one.

Therefore, basing eligibility definition on a specific physical skills do not lead to a universal definition of fitness.

The fact is that the success of fitness will be determined by a definition of fitness ...Then take time to make sure you have a clear definition of fitness.

Once you see how a clear definition of fitness can improve your physical training, you'll wonder how you ever physically trained in the past without one.

Then what would a universal definition of fitness be for someone who wanted to physically train to become a better human being, all round?

I am glad you asked ... but let's step by step.

Here's a good definition of fitness ...

The degree of competence and ability to perform in all physical abilities--cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and robustness.

Feel already criticism from the crowd athletics ...You can "tweak" the performance of all physical abilities in this definition of fitness at the same time.

And are absolutely right!

Fitness is not the "maximization" of a particular physical skill in a particular time, but rather "Optimization" of all physical abilities at any time.

Fitness is a compromise of all the different physical abilities that make up human activities.

Watch this way…

We say that all physical abilities were presented separately.

Some specialized athletes would score very high on some physical skills ... and very low on others.

But a person who personified fitness true, universal would Score well on all physical abilities ... without being necessarily the best at any one skill.

Here's an excellent definition fitness ...

The acceptable compromise and deliberate competence and ability to perform in all areas of resistance cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and toughness to produce best results under the most circumstances.

Not only is it a compromise universal fitness of all physical abilities ... but is the ability of all to integrate all physical abilities and a flow capacity for next perfectly to complete a task.

So, what would be adopting this definition of fitness do for you?

The training program would be evaluated physical fitness as well "optimized" all physical abilities and not just as well it "maximized" a particular skill at the expense of everyone else.

Basically, structuring your physical training to improve all physical abilities of this definition of fitness would greatly improve the performance on all physical in a wider variety of tasks.

Now that's not because most of us physically train?

Studying this definition of fitness and use it to measure your current training program of physical fitness.

As we measure up?

If your current training program lacks ... surely it is time for a change.

Your fitness success depends on it!

Muscle and Fitness Go hand in hand

sheemobaxter Friday, October 22, 2010

Believe it or not, there is a formula of muscle and fitness. I know that sometimes the fitness industry can be quite confusing. How to start your search for the solution of fitness, are flooded and bombarded from all the "fast". If you are not familiar with this term in reference to fitness, it's probably because started using me. I use it in reference to someone who is looking for a quick sale and have no really care to help their customers get solution of muscle and fitness they want. I'm going to help you find some focus and direction guide you through the storm for muscle and fitness potential.

Muscle and fitness is the answer to your problem. So, expect me to come in as muscle and fitness magazine can give you the information, tips and tricks for your body around, turn right? Wrong. I can honestly say that I am a subscriber to the magazine muscle and fitness.I find the muscle and fitness to be one of the best magazines to use as the source for the latest information and more fitness and techniques that give the best results and faster practise. However, this is not the muscle and fitness that I'm talking about.

What muscle and fitness are talking about then? The I'm talking and muscle your fitness. The biggest contributor to levels of fitness of your body or lack is muscle of your body content. The highest proportion of muscle mass that is present in your body, which burn more calories in a day.The same can be said to have a smaller percentage of muscle mass, causing you to burn less calories. the truth of the matter is that, with a high percentage of muscle mass, you will burn more calories than a person of the same body size and weight, with a lower muscle mass, while you are both sitting on the couch.Muscle and fitness depend your muscle density.

A higher percentage of muscle doesn't mean largest mass. The important thing that you should remember about the muscle and fitness is that the mass of muscle tissue is subject to its density. An individual, that works with low to moderate weight but with high repetitions will have the muscle tissue, leaner and more dense than someone who works exclusively with high weight and low repetitions. In fact, bodybuilders will actually go back and forth between the two training techniques to ensure that they don't lose muscle density in their pursuit to get dimensions.

Want some proof? Some of the best examples that I can give it to you to demonstrate how the muscle and fitness are tied together are easy for me to give it to you. They are extremely high profile, that makes my job much easier.Watching any retired NFL athlete or body builder, who fails to maintain a routine preparation and constant training to keep their muscles and fitness. notice that these muscle and fitness degrade individuals, especially in the region of the stomach. This is only due to the fact that have not kept to intense physical training which has maintained a muscle high-density throughout their career. Their muscles slowly lost its powerful density due to a fall in demand.Changes of muscle and fitness are greater than anymore due to a big difference between levels of training at the peak of their careers and their pensions.

What should I do on muscle and fitness?Well, the best way to ensure the greatest potential for muscle and fitness, she should exercise regularly.I think a good mixture of cardiovascular exercise, weight and resistance training and training body. body Training consists of calf-raising, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and flutter-kicks. my routine cardiovascular is a mixture of swimming, running and the Hill on motorbikes exercising at the gym. My weight training routines are very versatile, doing three exercises for every major muscle group and two muscle groups daily. Hosted by personal trainer Tony Horton, the series of DVDs will help you get lean, bulk up, or grow stronger, with an endless variety of mix-and-match routines to keep you motivated. The secret behind the P90X system is an advanced training technique called "muscle confusion," which accelerates the fitness process by constantly introducing new moves and routines so that your body never plateaus and you never get bored. The more you confuse the muscle, the harder your body has to work to keep up. And the more variety you put into your workout, the better and faster your results will be. By breaking old routines and opening new doors, secondary and tertiary muscles are constantly being activated and developed.

In addition to the 12 DVD workouts, the P90X comes with a comprehensive three-phase nutrition plan, specially designed supplement options, a detailed fitness guide packed with valuable information on how to get the most from your program, a How to Bring It DVD that provides a quick overview of the system, a calendar to track your progress, online peer support, and much more.

The DVD Workouts
Each of the 12 highly diverse and intense DVD workouts focuses on either a specific set of muscle groups or a unique training technique.

  • Workout One: Chest & Back. This superset chest-and-back-blasting workout emphasizes two classic upper-body exercises--push-ups and pull-ups--to build strength and develop shape. The combination of these two push and pull movements will help you burn loads of calories while simultaneously attacking, strengthening, and developing multiple muscle groups.

  • Workout Two: Plyometrics. Get ready to go airborne. Offering more 30 explosive jumping moves, this intense cardio routine will keep you in the air most of the time. Plyometrics, also known as jump training, has been proven to dramatically improve athletic performance. If your sport involves a ring, rink, field, court, or track, this training will give you the edge. Just be prepared to "bring it" for a full hour when you leap into this workout, because there is no letting up.

  • Workout Three: Shoulders & Arms. Nothing rounds out the perfect physique like a pair of well-defined arms and shoulders, and with its potent combination of pressing, curling, and fly movements, this routine will leave you feeling stronger and looking sexier. Whether you want to build muscle mass or just slim and tighten what you've already got, these targeted shoulder and arm exercises will give you the results you want.

  • Workout Four: Yoga X. Yoga is a vital part of any fitness regimen, and is an absolute must for an extreme program like P90X. This routine combines strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and breath work to enhance your physique and calm your mind. Yoga X will leave you feeling energized, invigorated, and maybe even a little enlightened.

  • Workout Five: Legs & Back. Get ready to squat, lunge, and pull for a total-body workout like no other. While the main focus of this workout lies in strengthening and developing the leg muscles (quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves), there are also a handful of great pull-up exercises to give your legs a quick breather while you work the upper body.

  • Workout Six: Kenpo X. Kenpo X was created to give P90X users a high-intensity cardiovascular workout packed with lots of punching and kicking combinations to improve balance, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. During this workout you'll learn some of the most effective ways to defend yourself, while at the same time getting your body in peak condition.

  • Workout Seven: X Stretch. Stretching is the one thing that will help you achieve a higher level of athleticism over a longer period of time. The X Stretch routine is an integral part of the program, as it helps prevent injuries and avoid plateaus. The extensive full-body stretches that make up this routine use disciplines from Kenpo karate, hatha yoga, and various sports to ensure that your body is fully prepared to meet all P90X challenges head-on.

  • Workout Eight: Core Synergistics. Each and every exercise in the Core Synergistics workout recruits multiple muscle groups to build and support the core (lumbar spine and trunk muscles), while at the same time conditioning your body from head to toe. Loaded with a variety of fun, unique, and challenging exercises, this routine will get you moving in all directions to maximize your P90X results.

  • Workout Nine: Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps. Packed with an array of moves that target both large and small muscles, this workout will do wonders for your upper body. In just one full sequence you'll get a healthy dose of presses, flys, and extensions to push you to the brink. The results will be a stronger, leaner, and highly defined upper torso that will leave you looking awesome, with or without a shirt.

  • Workout 10: Back & Biceps. With a host of curls and pull-ups, this routine will make it fun to flex those powerful biceps. But don't worry, ladies--by using lighter weight, you can focus on toning and tightening these showcase arm muscles without adding the size that most guys covet. Additionally, this workout also provides some great back definition that everyone can appreciate. Regardless of your goals, you will achieve them in dramatic fashion if you dig in and max out your reps.

  • Workout 11: Cardio X. This low-impact cardio routine can be used in a variety of ways to meet your P90X goals. Bodyweight Training for fitness-More Than You Think?

sheemobaxter Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Fitness is a complex term. That's why when someone asks a universal definition of fitness, usually you get something vague like this, "fitness shall be fit". I don't think I ask someone (even fitness professionals). But once you understand the true nature of fitness, I trust that you'll see why training bodyweight for fitness should be a part of your training program on all.

Then, let's start with my definition of fitness!

Fitness is the acceptable compromise and deliberate competence and ability to perform in all areas of resistance cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and toughness to produce best results under the most circumstances.

It would be better to read that again to make sure that you get.

As you can see, the fitness is stronger. Is more powerful heart and lungs.Fitness is the ability to use all your physical abilities simultaneously and without problems to overcome physical challenges. And body weight training is an excellent method for fitness training on all!

Normally, people looking for fitness focus on just one or two physical skills needed to qualify. Alternatively, they base their training on the result of fit, how to burn fat or muscle building, muscle having see or be lean doesn't necessarily mean you are fit! However, being fit typically manifests itself as a strong body, muscular, skinny.

There are three types of challenges you'll face in sport, work and life.

1) challenge requires that you move your body to complete the operation

2) challenge requires that you move an object external to finish

3) challenge you must move your body and an external object to complete the operation

And to make things more complicated, the challenge can take any of fitness and physical abilities in any combination. As you can see, being able to move your body requires for two types of challenges and therefore should be trained accordingly.Training body weight are important.

Health and fitness

For most of US Government schools, PE (physical education) were in the school curriculum. So we had no choice but to satisfy and treat it as one of the school. For outdoor initiated, PE lessons were as big as many gave an outlet for all juvenile hormones exert themselves. For those of us fear PE (myself included), our main thoughts were more like "what is the use of PE when it does not improve our examination scores". We were so wrong then.

Only now, with the approach of middle-aged do we realized the mistake of not having built a physical more reliable through our younger days to handle the pressure and stress of life today. However, it is not too late.It is not yet the end of my life. can I still make a difference.

Not someone once said that the glory of this temple in our days will be more glorious our former ones. So, here I am, write something on suitability hoping stimulate my mid body to greater heights.

The best way to good health is mild to moderate physical exercise. This suits me well, because we are so, so busy and now is a valuable asset in today's economy. The minimum amount of time spent on exercises of physical torture and still be able to help me to maintain a healthy body-will be right for me.

All I want to achieve is a healthy body. I am not a guru of fitness or exercise freak (sorry for the term used).I like a bit of laziness once a while.

I like to pamper myself with some pleasures as late lunch and couching in front of the TV.But I realized that this cannot be the norm, otherwise it will be my grave digging as soon as possible.

Do you want to be fit or you want to be healthy? Hey, I thought that meant the same.

Well, the fitness has been defined against the concept of physical work capacity, or the amount of work that can make the body. eligibility of an individual may be determined in a laboratory to look at how much energy can be produced on a loop when the bicycle Ergometer at a specific rate of heart, or an athletic track by observing what may be carried out at a set time.Fitness can be understood also in relation to a number of components included, endurance, flexibility, strength and power. you must be eligible to play many sports, including soccer, hockey, and tennis.

On the other hand, good health is a broader concept that includes free from disease and illness and in good state of mental and spiritual well-being.

Normally, you fit and being healthy go hand in hand. But it is not always so.For example, you can be very fit, playing tennis, but suffers from a major health problem such as alcoholism.

When we understand that these two concepts and the difference between fitness and good health, then you will understand that actually requires less exercise to be healthy. You really need more exercise, get fit and stay in shape.

How do you measure?

Many people need to be suitable because their jobs or careers so dictate. If you're an athlete or an athlete you have to be suitable, otherwise you are out of the game.If you are a soldier or a fireman, you must be fit because a decision could mean life or death for you only when you need it most.

To be eligible, you will have to follow a set program of exercise which we call the training.Proper training will occur always in a fair and professional environment that have facilities to train through the supervision of experienced and regimented.Examples of such training are fitness training gym, running, weight lifting, swimming programs etc.

In this context, the intensity of exercise program is varied to achieve different levels of fitness. This means that if you want to be very, very fit, you must have a moderate or high intensity above level. normally, to achieve these target levels of fitness, the individual without doubt become even healthier. However, if you do not want to be fit but only healthy, you don't need to exercise as hard.

How to be healthy?

On the other hand, if you want to be healthy, then just a level more mild exercises to be healthy and stay healthy.Sometimes, fear and anxiety of suffering from heart diseases, excessive blood cholesterol, obesity or mental health problems, propels us remain physically active.

You don't have to have the same intensity of training to stay healthy to stay fit. you may include your physical exercises in your normal routine. instead of enter your compact car and drive round the block, for the purpose of distance Park and walk all the way.Walk through the golf course and its anchor Bag instead of a golf cart or exercise a caddie. Perform some simple exercises behind the desk in the Office with isometric exercises when nobody's looking for. do some pushup or situps between commercials on TV.

All I'm saying is that you don't have to torture yourself to stay healthy.

Some active life tips:

* Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.

* Do not use the remote control to change channels TV. stand up from the armchair.

* Bring the jogging shoes when traveling outstation in case find
jog/leisure for a short hike.

To be healthy, some experts advise to be physically active at least five days a week.

Increasingly we are living in a world where we require less physical activity in our lives we have to wash and dry appliances for ourselves, transport vehicles and desks where we sit and work or study.
At school we always say ' sit '.

In view of these influences technological "bad" that prevented us from moving, any physical activity is a gain of health.

Not everyone can subscribe to a magic formula to the amount of exercise to achieve an advantage.

The right key is making an effort and persevere. as soon as you move, WINS!

If you have no idea at all for the ideas of fitness, consider some of the following?

* dancing-is the name the style

* bicycles, scooters, inline skates, and skateboards

* dry ice skating, skiing and snowboarding

* Gymnastics/tumbling

* swimming pool

* martial arts

* task based gym

* team sports (soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, etc.)

* walk

* Skip or skip the rope

* kites and frisbees

* hide-and-seek

* the dog walk

For young people, you can also exercise and earn money at the same time: wash the car, shovel snow, shopping, wash Windows, empty or gardening.

Cheers for a healthy life.

WHY JOGGING IS BAD FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND FITNESS

Drive down any scenic road on a weekend morning, and you're likely to see more joggers than scenery. You might feel jealous at how fit and energetic they look, and perhaps even a twinge of shame as you look down at the box of donuts in the seat next to you which was your purpose for being out this beautiful morning.

But are your feelings of jealousy and shame justified? Should it be you out there in high end cool running gear jogging along to shed some pounds and get more fit?

After a careful analysis, we think you'll agree the correct answer is NO, that should not be you. Why?

Because Jogging is BAD for weight loss and fitness.

While you definitely should be looking for ways to lose weight and become more fit, millions of people are doing more harm than good choosing jogging as their form of exercise. Can millions of people be wrong? Well, grab a donut, read on and decide for yourself.

FIRST A FEW DEFINITIONS

Ok, let's be clear who and what we are talking about with some definitions:

JOGGER - Person who runs 1 hour per workout session at a pace of 5 miles per hour (12 minutes per mile). Since many joggers keep a faster pace than that. We will also address "Runners" who keep an 8 mile per hour pace (under 8 minutes per mile). These definitions are provided by the Mayo Clinic Weight Loss Website.

WEIGHT LOSS - The losing of weight per your scale or your clothes feeling more loose. Sorry, buying new, larger clothes does not qualify under this definition (be great if it would, eh?).

FITNESS - There are many ways to define fitness. We have chosen one that hopefully matters to the most people: A person's overall physical health measured by their ability to successfully perform a wide variety of functional tasks.

WHY JOGGING IS BAD FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND FITNESS - THE EVIDENCE

CALORIC DEFICIT

You will likely outeat the calories you burn while jogging or running

According to the Mayo Clinic, a 160 pound person who jogs for an hour will burn 584 calories. A 160 pound runner ramps up the calories burned in an hour to 986. If you weigh more you burn more calories, if you weigh less you burn less. Many people don't jog for an hour per workout, but we want joggers to have a chance at success here so we'll pretend they all do.

In order for our jogger to lose weight as a direct result of this workout they will need to ensure they do not eat more calories than the 584-986 they just burned. This is what's called the "caloric deficit" and it's probably the most widely accepted and proven method to weight loss.

How realistic is that? Not very. An hour of any exercise tends to create a pretty serious appetite at some point later that day (which would be the worst time to eat it by the way), let alone the feeling of "entitlement" that comes from a workout well done. So most joggers (from here forward when I say joggers I am including "runners" unless noted) are going to head out for a nice meal to celebrate their efforts. A meal that will have much higher calories than what they would eat if they didn't jog.

But does it really take a huge meal to make jogging or running a net loser for weight loss? The Power Bar you eat right before the run has 230 calories, that bagel with the cream cheese "schmear" you eat with your running group after the run has 400 or more calories, as does ONE decent sized slice of pepperoni pizza you've surely earned. If you decide to splurge on dessert because you jogged today, any decent one will surely add 500 or more calories. We won't even mention the couple extra beers or glasses of wine...oops, guess we just did!

So it's a good bet that joggers and even runners will add enough calories to their diets on exercise days to outeat what they just burned, which at best will be a breakeven, and very often will create a net caloric (as in WEIGHT) GAIN.

But we are not stopping there. What about on those days you don't jog? How many people are really that disciplined to cut back on their eating since they won't be burning those additional calories? More often, you hear "I'll run this off tomorrow" as they head back for seconds on the pasta. So, now the increase in calories caused by jogging on workout days leads to more calories on non workout days, further increasing weight gain.

We contend this is how MOST people manage their eating, which means most joggers are gaining weight as a result of their jogging efforts.

To be fair, there are a select few people who do manage their calories more effectively than outlined above-- we have a name for those people - "The 2% club": The 2% of people who successfully maintain a low calorie diet. While members of the 2% club can create a caloric deficit by jogging, it still will not be a signficant deficit, and more importantly 2% Clubbers DON'T NEED TO JOG TO LOSE WEIGHT because they are successfully dieting!

MUSCLE CATABOLISM

You will actually lose muscle while jogging, especially since jogging does not involve your upper body in any meaningful way.

A "catabolic state" refers to the state in which your body is burning protein for its nutritional needs. A catabolic state is one you'd like to avoid as it means you are burning muscle to create energy for your exercise efforts. Yet joggers and runners are putting their bodies in this state every time they work out.

When you jog you are using your leg muscles which gives them a reason to grow stronger. That's good, but to jog for an hour your body needs to find energy, and low intensity activities like jogging for an hour will need to access energy from all possible sources which include fat and muscle.

Here's a simple question: What does jogging do to benefit your upper body? Simple answer: NOTHING. So along with the fat you want to burn, your body is burning muscle as part of it's energy to let you do your jogging workouts. And, where is it most likely to "catabolize" this muscle? From your upper body where it's not being used and therefore not needed.

And while jogging can give you stronger legs, a weak upper body is harmful to fitness as defined at the start of this essay. This is one example of how jogging harms your fitness. There's more to come.

Most joggers and runners become aware of this and start doing upper body resistance training such as weight lifting to prevent muscle catabolism. That's a really good idea, but that's not jogging for fitness is it? No, that's having to do MORE exercise to offset the negative effects of jogging!

Plus, studies indicate that every pound of muscle on your body takes 3 to 10 times more calories to support than fat, so allowing any muscle catabolism means you are actually slowing your metabolism throughout the day. Slower metabolism does not sound like a good thing for either weight loss or fitness does it?

Again, the devil's advocate will want to argue that joggers can minmize muscle catabolism without supplemental exercise by using Target Heart Rate Training. Basically, this involves exercising at a rate below your "target" heart rate to encourage more fat burning. So now we are jogging slower which means we are burning fewer calories which harms our caloric deficit. This makes weight loss even more difficult. Now we're confused. What's the most effective way to jog again? Do we jog faster and burn more calories or jog slower and save more muscle?

ADAPTIVE RESPONSE

Your body will adapt to the challenge of jogging fairly quickly, thus making it progressively harder to lose weight or become more fit. Once your body adapts to jogging you enter a "death spiral" of needing to run further or faster or both to see any further improvement.

Adaptive response is just a fancy way of saying that your body will do it's best to adjust to whatever level of exercise you are trying to do. It will "adapt". This is why it's a lot easier to complete the 1 hour jog after you have done it 10 times than it is the first time you try it.

But when it comes to weight loss, adaptive response is exactly what you don't want. It means your body has reached a state where jogging is no longer a challenge, and because you are now capable of handling the task at hand, there is no reason to drop any additional fat or add any more muscle. In addition, your metabolism has a similar adapative response. You will be doing the same exercise, but whatever metabolic benefits you were getting will continue to decrease the better you get at it. You might think of this situation as a "plateau".

As adaptive response makes your runs less and less effective from a fitness, metabolic and weight loss standpoint, joggers are left with 2 choices: run faster or run farther to give your body a new challenge that it needs to improve upon in order to adapt. Running faster or farther is not necessarily a bad thing, but it dramatically increases your chances of injury and also starts to take an excessive amount of time to perform an effective workout. Plus it's HARD. A much harder jog (or run) that lasts a lot longer increases your chances of giving up on your jogging program. And if you do give up jogging because it becomes too much work to see any results, you are at risk of significant weight gain without an even more restrictive diet.

Bottom line, your adaptive response to jogging has a positive aspect in that it's good for your ability to jog (not necessarily for your overall fitness--see PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS), but it's BAD for your weight loss efforts, and it creates a never ending "death spiral" of harder, longer jogs or harder, faster runs that most people will have trouble staying with due to injury or lack of motivation.

INJURIES AND OTHER HEALTH ISSUES

Jogging's repetitive motion over long periods of time makes joint injuries very likely. Other injury and health concerns come from the adaptive response death spiral mentioned above, running in traffic and in inclement weather.

Pavement is hard and unforgiving. Your legs pounding against it for thousands of steps per jogging session can cause serious short term and long term injuries to your joints and muscles.

Sure, there are good running shoes that can help prevent injuries, but sooner or later you're bound to injure a knee or ankle or even worse, a hip while jogging.

There's also the issue of running on the roads with automobile traffic which has been known to cause serious injury or even death. That cannot be considered a plus for joggers.

And, the sheer length of jogging, a repetitive motion for 1 full hour, increases the chance of a variety of injuries like shin splints or a variety of foot problems versus shorter forms of exercise due to muscle fatigue.

There's more. Consideration must be given to the health and safety risk of running in inclement weather. Jogging in extreme heat or cold, rain, snow or worst of all icy conditions greatly increases the risk of injury or an illness that makes you miss workouts for a short period of time or possibly something worse.

Of course the treadmill offers a viable solution to many of these issues, but not all of them. And many joggers insist on jogging outdoors throughout the year. When they do, the risk of injuries and other health related issues is very real and should be considered in an evaluation of the benefits of jogging.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Jogging has few practical applications. Jogging is not a good form of training for most other activities -- except for more jogging. Plus, the loss of upper body muscle and lower body joint problems that often result from jogging can actually decrease your overall fitness level.

Remember our definition of fitness: A person's overall physical health measured by their ability to successfully perform a wide variety of functional tasks.

We would have to concede jogging could improve your abilities at the following activities:

1) More Jogging

2) Basketball - well not really the sprinting up and down the court to be competitive, but you can jog down to set up a half court play with the best of them.

3) Football - Jogging from the huddle to the line of scrimmage.

4) Baseball - Jogging to the dugout with a beer in your hand at your weekly softball league.

Umm, that's all we can think of. The rest of the activities in the above sports and many others like skiing, tennis and golf require strength (both muscle and joint), the ability to use your body at full speed, as well as hand eye coordination, none of which are helped by jogging.

The fact that jogging has no practical applications as cross training for any other sport makes it a lot of time spent for very little benefit, except of course for #1 above--more jogging. This is especially true when you compare jogging to other exercise alternatives like strength training, and interval training. You can spend a lot less time exercising and become more effective at performing all sorts of other sports and activities. This in turn offers you more opportunities to have fun and improve your fitness. Does developing your jogging skills help you with any other activities or tasks you like to do?

THE VERDICT?

Based upon the overwhelming evidence outlined above, the verdict is Jogging is a BAD exercise for weight loss and fitness. Running for an hour at a faster pace does offer certain advantages over jogging but still ends up a net negative for weight loss and fitness when all the factors are considered.

SUNDAY DRIVING

So, the next time you head out for weekend donuts you can smile at thin or fit looking joggers, because now you know they didn't get that way by only jogging. And when you get home, grab a maple custard (my favorite!) and spend 30 minutes studying weight loss and fitness plans that work on improving your body's metabolism to solve the caloric deficit problem because there are much better ways than exercising endlessly and cutting calories. Also, a good fitness plan should prepare you for a wide variety of tasks and activities.

If you study hard and plan correctly, your exercise program should only take half the time the joggers spend but will take you much further down the road to weight loss and fitness.

We hope you do your homework and find the plan that's right for you because being happy with your weight and fitness is a great feeling that everyone should enjoy.

Wii Fitness games-a new way to get in shape

sheemobaxter Friday, October 15, 2010

Wii fitness games have become increasingly popular and more sophisticated, since the Wii was launched in 2006. Motion sensor controllers, casual gaming platform and world appeal to men and women of all ages, the Wii console has become the perfect platform for fitness video games.

The suitability of great first game for Wii is Wii Fit.Wii Fit comes bundled with the Wii Balance Board that allows you to control your screen movements. when performing the exercises, the balance Board feed back every movement you make the game and the game will share how you're doing.

Although Nintendo has launched Wii Fit to show how well the balance Board has worked as a new game controller (in the same way that Wii Sports showed off how well the Wii remote controller worked), the game Wii Fit has been enormously popular and is still number 1 on the charts games in Britain and other countries, almost 18 months after his release.

Based on success of Wii Fit, many other fitness games are now available on Wii console, including the sequel Wii Fit, called Wii Fit Plus.

The arms of fitness original 1980s and 1990s were fed by the availability of VCRs and DVD players in every home. celebrities and their trainers were ready to produce training videos and the low price of videos and DVDs made it easy for people to do these workouts at home.

The problem with these videos workout was though, that were a one-size-fits-all solution, and users could customize their workouts or modify your exercise routine in any way.If you wanted a different workout, you had to buy a new workout video.

The enormous popularity of the Wii console in the world now has sparked a new boom Wii fitness and interactive capabilities now allow users to choose a set routine of exercise in a single game.

Most games of Wii fitness allow users to create personalized training programs based on responses that are entered into the game.Games can also create multiple workout routines for different users, making them ideal for families to use.

And like this game Wii fitness have become increasingly popular, celebrities and their trainers were quick to add their names to titles too. These include Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum and Daisy Fuentes Pilates.

Each game fitness uses a slightly different format to make the games fun, engaging and challenging and users must decide what motivates exercise when you choose a fitness video game.

Wii Fit introduced the Wii Balance Board, and most of the games on the market now incorporate the balance Board in play for at least some of the exercises. This helps people use their balancing systems if they have them, but does not prevent people from using your game if you don't own a Wii Balance Board.

My Fitness Coach is one of the leading fitness video games on the Wii and is one of the few that don't use the Balance Board or remote controller during workouts. instead, the game makes use of an avatar in the game, called Maya, which acts as your personal trainer gives you excercise. Maya tips, not your workouts with you and shouts of encouragement when you feel like you are about to collapse. This game of personal trainer works really well to create highly personalized experience.

EA Sports Active takes a different approach and makes use of the Wii remote controller nunchuck, and a band of resistance exercise during workouts.Movements with the Wii remote and nunchuck tell the game how are you doing the exercises and the band of resistance acts as weights for people who do not have any equipment to exercise at home. EA Sports Active also includes some exercises that can be done with the Wii Balance Board.

One thing that most of these fitness games have in common is the huge selection of exercises that come with every game. This allows all games mix and match exercises to give you a lot of different workouts and it prevents you from getting bored. Exercises usually include stretching, cardio, strength, upper body, lower body strength, abdomen and yoga.

Besides these general fitness games, there are few specialized games that focus on only one type of exercise program. Yoga for Wii and Daisy Fuentes Pilates are ideal for fans of yoga and Pilates wanting only these workouts and not worry about cardio or other strength exercises.

While the first wave of fitness video games were purely operational games, the second generation of fitness games now includes healthy eating plans to integrate the great training programs.

NewU Personal Trainer includes complete exercise programs from personal trainer at Fitness First gym chain, along with custom menus for healthy by team "you are What You Eat". combination of exercise and eat healthy lifestyle makes these games perfect for the whole family.

Based on the current success of videogames fitness and inclusion of healthy eating menu which will take place the next games to the next level, it's hard not to recommend a Wii fitness game to anyone who is seriously thinking of starting an exercise routine.

The relatively cheap price of most games and the wide variety of exercises in each game, makes it a very viable option for most people over the price of a subscription gym. This is highlighted even more when comparing the cost of a game at the cost of membership to a gym for an entire household.

Ability to work whenever you want (and in the comfort of your own home), the ability to create and store personal workouts and eating plans for each family member and the opportunity to select their personal screen training environments and music, makes Wii fitness games perfect for singles, couples and families looking to get active.

The services of a program of fitness center and the contribution it can make while working out on those belly fat, are, in fact, one of the best help you can get from a professional who knows what he is doing.

So You Wanna Be a Fitness Model?

People that follow my stuff know I generally write about nutrition, supplements, training, and other topics that are more science based than subjective topics, such as what is covered in this article. I decided to shuck my science geek persona, and write on a topic I know will be helpful to thousands of would be and wanna be fitness models.

As well a known "hard core" science based no BS writer, why I am writing what some will perceive as a "fluff" article? Over the years I have gotten hundreds, perhaps thousands, of gals that ask me via email, letters, or in person "how do I become a fitness model Will? You have been in the business a long time, surly you of all people should know." I get this from newbies and I get this from women that have been at it a while but have been unable to "break in" effectively.

The fact is, I have been in the fitness, health, and bodybuilding biz a long time, and though I am known as a science and nutrition based "guru" type, I have trained many a fitness athlete, and judged fitness and figure/bikini shows for the NPC, Fitness America, Fitness USA, and other federations as well as given marketing and business advice to all sorts of athletes, including fitness models. So, it's not as far fetched as it might seem that I am going to use this space to cover a non scientific topic, which is, how one goes about being a fitness model.

This article will be useful to both experienced and novice types looking to "break in" to the biz. If you are already a professional and successful fitness model, I am sure you may still glean some useful information from this article.

First the bad news, there is no one way to become a successful fitness model. There is no single path or magic secret. There are however some key things a person can do to greatly improve their chances of "making it" in the fitness biz as a model, and perhaps using that success as a launching pad to greater things, such as movies, TV, etc.

Several of the top fitness models (Trish Stratus and Vicki Pratt come to mind but there are many others) have gone onto careers in entertainment of all kinds. Bottom line, though there is no magic secret to being successful as a fitness model, this article will be about as close to a blueprint for success as you will find.

"Do I need to compete?"

This is a question I get asked all the time and it's not an easy one to answer. In fact, the answer is (drum roll) yes and no. The person has to deicide why they are competing in the first place to answer that question. For example, do you need to compete if your goal is to be a successful fitness model?

The answer is no. Many of today's well-known fitness models have never competed, or they competed in a few small shows and it was clearly not part of their success as fitness models. However, competing does have its potential uses.

One of them is exposure. At the upper level shows, there will often be editors, publishers, photographers, supplement company owners, and other business people. So, competing can improve your exposure. Also, competing can make sense if you are trying to build a business that is related to your competing or will benefit from you winning a show.

For example, say you have a private training gym you are trying to build. Sure, having the title of say Ms Fitness America, or winning the NPC Nationals and being an IFBB pro, will help your reputation and the notoriety of your business. There are many scenarios were it would help to have won a show for a business or other endeavors.

On the other hand, it must be realized that winning a show does not in any way guarantee success in the business end (and it really is a business) of being a fitness model. The phone wont ring off the hook with big offers for contracts. Also, it's very important to realize that it's common that the 4th or 6th or 8th place finisher in a fitness or figure show will get more press than the winner. Why? Though the winner might have what it took to win that show, it's often other gals the editor, publishers, supplement companies etc, feel is more marketable.

I have seen it many times where the winner was shocked to find she didn't get nearly the attention she expected and other girls who placed lower have gotten attention in the form of photos shoots, magazine coverage, etc. Something to keep in mind when you ask yourself the important question "do I need to compete and if so, why am I competing?" Answer that question, and you will know the answer to the heading of this section. Winning a title of some sort can be a stepping stone, but it is not in itself any guarantee of success in the fitness industry. It's like a college degree; it's what you do with it.

Now. If you compete for the fun of it, then by all means go for it, but the above is focusing on competing as it relates to the business aspect of being a fitness model.

Right body, wrong federation?

Ok, so after reading the above you have decided you are going to compete, or will compete again. If you don't plan to compete, you can skip this section. The biggest mistake I see here is so many gals have the right body for the wrong federation. Each federation has its own judging criteria and a competitor will do poorly simply because they didn't bother to research which show would be best suited for them.

I will give you a perfect real world example of this. Recently I judged a show whose criteria for the figure round was the women should be more on the curvy softer side with some tone, vs. being more muscular and athletic with less bodyfat that other federations might allow. At this show one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen came out. She was very proportional, great muscle tone, lean, and athletically shaped with narrow hips and waist and wider shoulders. How did she do at this show? She didn't even place in the top ten!

Why? Because she was not what we were instructed to look for and didn't fit the criteria. After the show I informed her that she looked great, but this may not the federation for her. I told her she had much more of an NPC type body, where a little more muscle, athletic build, and less bodyfat is rewarded.

The following week I was judging an NPC fitness, figure, and bodybuilding show and there she was. How did she do? She won the entire show with all judges voting her number one unanimously.

Conversely, if your body type tends to be more rounded and toned, but with a little more bodyfat, wider (but not fat!) hips, you may be better off competing in say the Fitness America Pageants. If you are going to compete:

(1) find out exactly what the judging criteria is for that federation and

(2) go see those shows as a spectator for several different federations and see which one your physique, style, etc will fit into best.

(3) You have to decide if you truly have the athletic abilities to compete in a fitness competition (which requires a routine) or a figure/bikini competition.

I often see women who would do well in a figure show but really don't have the athletic abilities do the routines required to be competitive with other athletes in the show. Some shows will allow you to do both competitions and some wont.

Networking 101: dos and don'ts...

In so many respects, this is the area that will make or break you in any business, and yet, people in the fitness industry do an amazingly poor job at it. If you don't network and market yourself properly, you can pretty much forget about having any real success as a fitness model, or a success in virtually any business. For the sake of space, we will stick to fitness.

When I first started out, I was a self marketing machine. I could be found at every show I thought might be an opportunity, walking the isles of trade shows, bodybuilding, shows, fitness show, and others. I gave out a zillion cards and I took a million home with me, and followed up on each and every one. I went to as many industry related meetings, outings, parties, etc. as I could get into. I now have the reputation and experience in the industry that I don't have to go to such a show unless I feel like it, or have meetings, but they were quite helpful in the beginning.

I am always amazed at the number of fitness models who contact me who have never even been to the Arnold Classic Fitness Weekend, or the Mr. Olympia, or the trade shows like the NNFA Expo West and others. If you want to make it in the fitness business you sure as hell had better treat it like a business.

I have seen many a pretty girl who wants to be a fitness model who thinks if they stand there looking pretty long enough, someone is going to offer to put their face on the cover of a magazine. News flash, there are millions of beautiful women out there and to be noticed, you have to hussle to get that business like everyone else by networking your butt off, or having a good agent (if you can afford such a thing) who is doing it for you.

Pick a few major industry shows to attend (some of which were mentioned above) and go to them every year. Have a plan of attack of exactly how you plan to market yourself and network. Many fitness models, bodybuilders, etc see a show as one big party. If that's you, then have fun at the party, but don't think you are really marketing yourself as a serous business person or athlete.

Another thing that always amazes me is the number of fitness models who either have no business cards, or have some cards they printed up on their bubble jet printer at home! They ask me to help them or what ever and I say "give me your card" and they look at me like "I am so pretty I should not need a card you fool." This attitude turns off editors, photographers, writers, and industry people faster then if they found out you were really a transvestite. Don't do it. For every pretty girl out there who thinks the world owes them a favor, there are 100 who are ready to act like professionals.

Ever wonder why some fitness model you know is doing better than you are even though you know you are prettier than her? That may be why...never ever go to a show to network without good cards, bios, and professionally done head and body shots you can give to said editors, publishers, photographers, industry types, etc. Don't stand around looking pretty assuming they will find you, find them first and introduce yourself. And of course it should go without saying you should be in good condition and have something of a tan to look your best.

You want to go to the shows and party? Fine, but do it in private after the work is done and don't make a fool out of yourself at some industry sponsored get together. Hell, I was virtually poured into a cab at last years Arnold Classic after going to a sushi place with some well know industry types and companies owners (you know who you are!) but at least no one saw me! We had our own little private get together after the show to let loose.

Let me give you one final real world example of how NOT to market yourself. Last year I was on retainer as a consultant to a mid sized supplement company. The owner of the company asked me if I knew a couple of fitness model types that could work his booth for a trade show. In fact, he requested "unknowns, some new faces people had not seen yet but had real potential to grow with the company." I went and found him two such gals I thought fit the bill.

He offered to pay their flights, room, and food plus a thousand dollars each for the days work. The two girls were told to be at the booth 9am sharp. The night before at the hotel, I saw the two girls getting in a cab at 11pm or so dressed to kill, clearly on their way out to party. The next day they showed up at the booth an hour and a half late and hung over! What was the result of this? (1) it embarrassed me to no end as I had recommended them to the company owner (2) they would never get work from that company again (3) they would never get any work from me again and (4) they would not get a reference from either of us for other jobs.

I see this type of thing all the time in the fitness biz, and it's not limited to fitness models. Amazingly, a few weeks after the show they emailed me and the company owner wanting to know when their next job would be! Amazing...

Who loves you baby?

If there is one universal truth, it's that the camera either loves you or it does not. Any professional photographers will tell you this. For some unknown reason, some people are very photogenic and some are not. Truth be known, there are some well known fitness models (who shall remain nameless as they would probably smack me the next time they saw me) who are not all that attractive in person. It's just that the camera loves them and they are very photogenic, but not terribly pretty in person.

Conversely, I have seen the reverse many times; a girl who is much better looking in person than in photographs. Such is the fate of the person who wants to be a model of any kind, including a fitness model. If you find you are not very photogenic, keep working with different photographers until you find one that really captures you well and pay that photographer handsomely!

Now, to be bluntly honest, there are also some wanna be fitness models who are not "unphotogenic", they're just "fugly"! There are some people out there who have no business trying to be fitness models. It does not make them bad people, it just means they need to snap out of their delusions and find a profession they are better suited for, like radio personality....

"How do I get in the magazines?"

This section sort of incorporates everything I have covered above, and adds in a few additional strategies. For example, as I mentioned before, competing in fitness shows and or figure/bikini shows can increase your exposure, thus getting the attention of some magazine publisher or photographer. Networking correctly at the various trade shows may also have the same effect, and of course having a good portfolio done by a photographer that really captures your look, a good web site, etc., will all increase your potential for getting into the magazines, or getting ad work, and so on.

However, all of these strategies are still somewhat passive versus active in my opinion. It's still the fitness model waiting to be "discovered." As far as I am concerned, waiting is for bus stops and pregnancy tests. Success waits for no man...or woman as the case me be. So, after all the above advice is taken into consideration as having an added effect to getting you magazine coverage, what else can be done?

For one thing, you should read and be familiar with all the magazines you want to be in so you know who is who and what the style of the different magazines are. I can tell you right now, if say the Editor-in-Chief of a good sized fitness or bodybuilding publications and says "hi, I am the Bob Smith what's your name?" and the fitness model has no idea who Bob Smith is, Bob will not take kindly to that. Why should he? You should know who the major players are in the publications you want to be seen in. He is doing you the favor, not the other way around. You should know who the major players are and actively seek them out, don't wait for them to "discover" you.

If you look at the masthead inside any magazine, it will tell you who the publisher is, who the Editor-in-Chief is and so forth. The mailing address for that magazine, and often the web site and email, can also be found. What is to stop you from looking up those names and mailing them your pictures and resume directly? Nothing, that's what. If you see a photo spread you think is really well done, what is to stop you from finding out who the photographer is and contacting them directly and sending them your pics? Nothing, that's what.

My point being, you want a get a break in the business, make the break, don't sit there thinking it's looking for you, because it's not. Be proactive, not reactive! Luck is the residue of design. Be successful by design. As my older brother used to say to me as a kid when I told him I was too scared to ask out a pretty girl "what's the worst that can happen Will? All she can say is no." That's the worst that can happen to you also.

Beware of web idiots, schlubs, morons, perverts, scum bags, and sleazoids!

This part is sort of self-explanatory but worth mentioning. As with all industries that deal in entertainment based media (e.g., television, theater, modeling, etc.), the fitness industry attracts its far share of web idiots, schlubs, morons, perverts, scum bags, and sleazoids, to name just a few.

There is also the class of person known as the schmoe, but we will leave that for another place and time. Point is you want to meet the right people while not getting involved with that group of worthless types who will only drag you down, delay you, or just flat out screw you up and over.

For example, a guy comes up and says he wants to "shoot you" for the magazines, but what do you really know of this guy? He has a camera and some business cards, so that makes him a photographer right? Wrong! If someone want to shoot you and they are not a well-known name (and you should know who the well known photographers are because you researched that already!), find out who they are. Do they have references you can call? Girls you can contact he has shot before and were happy with the work? What magazines has he published in? Does he do it professionally or as a hobby? That type of thing.

Another thing I see is the big web scam. I'm amazed how many girls get scammed by these web idiots. Lesson here is you get what you pay for, so when some person wants to build you a web site for free, you are getting what you pay for. Yes, there is good money to be made on the 'net, and the net can be great for marketing yourself and making contacts, but most of it's a scam.

You are better off paying a good web designer and web master who has experience with other fitness model types and has references you can talk to. I can't tell you the number of girls who have been screwed over by some internet thing that went to hell, like the "fan" who volunteers to build a free web site and either runs off with any money made from the site or puts their picks on porn sites and any number of other things that made them regret like hell ever agreeing to the site in the first place.

Clearly, I can't go down the list of all the possible pitfalls of the web idiots, schlubs, morons, perverts, scum bags, and sleazoids out there to be found in the entertainment business, but you get the idea. Be careful!

Conclusion.

Well that pretty much concludes my down and dirty guide to the basics of "making it" as a fitness model. Of course there are tons of business related issues I could cover and tricks I could give, but the above is the best advice you are going to find in s small space and will do more for you-if properly followed-than you may realize.

Good luck and see you in the magazines!
